STUDENT/FAMILY EXPECTATIONS
While there is no shortage of information touting the benefits of music study, it is very easy to miss the most important benefits of piano lessons. The process of learning a skill is a skill in itself that can be applied universally, but it requires, most importantly, daily practice. Students should expect to set aside at least 30 minutes a day to practice the week’s assignments, but of course there is no limit to how much you may practice.
This means that students must have something to practice on at home. I suggest having at least a keyboard with weighted keys that is touch sensitive, and ideally an acoustic piano. These can be found second-hand relatively inexpensively, but of course you must take care and make sure the piano is in good condition.
For younger students, a certain amount of family involvement is a must. Parents don’t need to sit with their children while they practice, but they do need to provide a quiet space without distractions. In the very early stages, parents should make themselves available for questions during practice time, but later on it will become a mostly independent activity. Family should be present at student recitals, it makes all the difference to the student to have a cheering section!
MAKE-UPS AND CANCELLATIONS
All lessons must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance in order to be made up. For monthly programs, half of each month’s lessons may roll over to be made up in the next month. The current month’s lessons must be taken first before make-ups from the previous month can be used. Any exceptions will be made at the teacher’s discretion. Any lessons cancelled by the teacher will be made up or prorated, at the teacher’s discretion.
PHOTO AND VIDEO RELEASE
Enrolled students will be asked to sign a media release so that videos of performances and small parts of lessons may be shared in promotional materials.
